Best Mountain Bikes Under $1500 You Can Buy In 2023

You are here: Home / Type Of Bikes / Best Mountain Bikes Under $1500 You Can Buy In 2023

January 2, 2020 //  by Phil

If you’re looking for a thrilling hobby to take, mountain biking is right up there among the best of them.

The only problem with mountain biking though, is that finding the right bike isn’t easy. You need to spend a lot and you need to spend your money wisely when shopping for a mountain bike.

Otherwise, you’ll end up buying something that’ll punch a sizable hole in your wallet without necessarily being a good buy. Or, for short, a waste of money.

This is especially true if it’s your first time shopping for a mountain bike. From broken chains to uncomfortable seats and numerous other issues, the wrong bike won’t just feel wrong – it’s easily an accident waiting to happen.

With that said, we’ve decided to create a list of some of the best mountain bikes under 1,500 dollars that you can find today.

While $1,500 is, by no means, a small amount of money, it’s a safe budget for those looking for the right mixture of safety, durability, and comfort without making too many compromises to make you feel like you didn’t get your money’s worth.

1. Diamondback Hook Hardtail

Costing nearly half the price of our $1,500 limit, the Diamondback Hook Hardtail warrants inclusion because of a balanced set of features that give you exactly your money’s worth, and perhaps so much more.

What Makes the Diamondback Hook Hardtail So Good?

Ideal Combination of High-Value Features

A lightweight hand-built aluminum frame, 120mm travel suspension fork (SR Suntour XCM), mechanical disc brakes (Tetra Aries) and aluminum arm, as well as steel chainring plus a single ring drivetrain (SRAM), the Diamondback Hook Hardtail looks like it was built specifically to give you the most out of your hard-earned money.

Double-Wall Wheels and Wide Tires

The Hook has DB SL-7 double wall wheels (27.5 inches) and wide 2.35 inch tires. This combination allows it to give just the right amount of buffer and stability to make rides more comfortable.

Quick-release Mechanism

Mountain bike tires take a lot of beating. That’s why they’re changed much more often than typical bike tires.

However, swapping them out can be a pain. Unless, of course, your bike has a quick-release mechanism, which the Hook has.

Available in Various Fits and Sizes

Coming in 16, 18, 20, and 22 sizes, the Hook can fit rides of both genders as short as 5-foot-4 and as tall as 6-foot-4.

Cons

  • The unsealed bottom bearing makes it prone to dirt and dust debris build-up.
  • Default fork can be hard to upgrade without a headset adapter.

2. SAVADECK DECK 300

Some bikes are meant to be for those looking for speed. Others are for those who want a safe and pleasurable riding experience.

The SAVADECK DECK 300 was clearly built for the latter.

From the reinforced disc brakes to cleverly designed handlebars and a carbon fiber frame, the DECK 300 was built with both safety and comfort in mind.

What Makes the SAVADECK DECK 300 So Good?

Safe and Comfortable to Ride On

The double mechanical disc brakes will make sure to put a stop on you as soon as you step on them, or so to speak. It doesn’t matter if you’re riding fast or slow. You can count on the reinforced brakes to protect you.

Carbon Fiber Frame

The carbon fiber frame ensures a light and durable right. Rest assured that even if you fall down or hit something, the frame will retain its shape and will look like nothing happened at all.

Multiple Size and Fit Options Available

The DECK 300 comes in multiple options. This include a 15.5-inch, 17-inch, and 19-inch frame. You can also get it in 27.5-inch or 29-inch wheels.

Cons

The DECK 300 is a lot heavier than you would expect a mountain bike with a carbon fiber frame would be.

3. Diamondback Atroz 3

The Diamondback Atroz 3 is another strong contender from one of the most trusted names in the mountain bike industry.

Functional, durable, and stylish, it’s hard NOT to love what the Atroz 3 brings to the table. This is especially true when you consider how affordable it is.

What Makes the Diamondback Atroz 3 So Good?

Built to Last for a Long Time

This bike was made to withstand trail after trail after trail of punishment. Case in point, the hand-made aluminum alloy frame was made to be just lightweight enough so as not to compromise durability and riding comfort.

Comfortable to Ride On

The front and rear suspensions of the Atroz 3 comes as much as 4 inches of travel. That’s a lot, all things considered.

Plus, it also features the RockShox Recon RL 13mm as its forks for the front suspension, further improving the comfort quality when riding the Atroz 3 even when you’re on the toughest of trails.

Simple and Easy to Use

Make no mistake, the 11-speed Shimano gears drive train are built for maximum performance. At the same time, beginners won’t have any trouble using the bike at all.

Con

You’ll want to replace the stock tires as soon as you can afford to do so.

4. BEIOU CB-024

BEIOU has built a strong reputation as manufacturers of some value mountain bikes over the past few years. The CB-024 is not an exception.

The carbon fiber frame is as solid as it gets. This is important, because, when it comes to mountain bikes, the more beatings a frame can take, the better.

With the CB-024, you won’t ever have to wonder if it can continue performing while withstanding all sorts of scratches and hits – it will.

What Makes the BEIOU CB-024 So Good?

Solid Carbon Fiber Frame

BEIOU has proven over the years that they know how to make good carbon fiber bike frames. That reputation shows with how strong and solid the CB-024 feels to ride on.

Hidden Disc Brakes

It’s a shame that BEIOU didn’t opt to put hydraulic disc brakes on the CB-024. Even then, the hidden disc brakes are plenty enough for the job.

Even though they are mechanical, they are very reliable. Plus, they’re well-hidden, so that’s a huge plus when it comes to aesthetics.

Shimano Deore M6000 Gearing System

The highly-praised Shimano Deore M6000 gearing system makes its way to the CB-024. It’s not the best, and it’s still 10 speed, but it has great value.

In particular, it enjoys several features usually only found on the more expensive XTR and XTR gear systems.

Cons

  • As has now become quite the trend among BEIOU bikes, you’ll want to spend for a new bike seat as soon as you get the CB-024.
  • With only 17, 19, and 21-inch models available, and very few varieties when it comes to wheel sizes, the CB-024 is not for shorter and averaged-sized bike riders.

5. SteppenWolf Tundra LTD

SteppenWolf made sure to cover all the bases with the Tundra series of mountain bikes.

Priced starting at $1,399 and going up to as high as $4,195, there’s a little bit of something for everyone with the Tundra.

However, as far as the best mountain bikes under 1,500 go, the Tundra LTD is no slouch even though it’s significantly cheaper compared to its more expensive siblings.

What Makes the Tundra LTD So Good?

Highly Responsive Triple Crankset

The biggest advantage of a triple crankset is that you have much more lower gears to choose from, so you can get virtually anything. This is a feature that comes in handy with mountain bikes.

But the problem is, most triple crankset bikes suffer from unresponsiveness. However, SteppenWolf made sure that the Tundra LTD’s triple crankset is as responsive as can be, leading to a pleasurable and comfortable riding experience, whether you’re riding up or down a trail.

Loaded With Top-End Features

There’s not much left for you to ask for and upgrade with the Tundra LTD. Its list of features reads like a list of all the features that you’d need and reasonably expect from a mountain bike at the $1,500 price range.

Cons

  • The handlebars aren’t for beginners. It’ll take some time for even advanced users to get used to them. You’ll want to spend some time on light trails first when using the Tundra LTD before going for the harder ones to get a good feel for the handlebar.
  • The Tundra Pro is only a couple of hundred dollars more (but still over the $1,500 price limit) and comes with the much-praised FSA Afterburner seat post and DT Swiss X Spline wheels, among others.

6. RALEIGH Bikes Kodiak 2

From the rugged and sleek mountain bikes, we go to the unassuming Kodiak 2 from RALEIGH.

At first glance, you won’t think that this is a mountain bike. In fact, you’re more likely to think that the Kodiak 2 was a road bike built for daily use.

However, upon closer inspection, and especially while riding it, its looks are as it is for a reason, and you might just end up loving the Kodiak 2 because of it.

What Makes the Kodiak 2 So Good?

Full-Suspension Build

Other mountain bikes feature only a front suspension system. The Kodiak 2 also features a rear suspension that helps create a more comfortable ride despite the constant bumps and fall from heights you’d expect to find yourself while on a mountain bike.

Reinforced Wheels

RALEIGH reinforced the wheels of the Kodiak 2 to minimize the damage from trailing through the toughest and roughest of terrains.

Aluminum Build

The aluminum frame ensures that the Kodiak 2 can take quite the beating.

Cons

  • The Kodiak 2 doesn’t just NOT look like a mountain bike, it also doesn’t feel like one. Even the larger Kodiak 2 sizes don’t feel quite like other mountain bikes. Larger rides, and even average-sized ones, may have a hard time finding a good position while riding the Kodiak 2.
  • The bike is a lot heavier than expected. Paired with its rather uncomfortable positioning, and you might find yourself taking a lot of time getting used to riding the bike.

The Best Mountain Bikes Under 1,500 – Why $1,500?

You might argue that mountain bikes exist in lower price ranges, and that’s true. However, unless you search hard enough, you’ll find that most bikes under 1,500 or 1,000 won’t have the necessary amount of features to make you feel safe and comfortable when going through rough terrain.

$1,500 is the sweet spot, or so to speak, when it comes to high-quality mountain bikes.

Of course, as you now know, we did end up rounding up a couple of mountain bikes that are priced lower than $1,000.

But you have to keep in mind, we didn’t do it just for the sake of it. Those bikes have proven themselves to be value purchases at and well above their respective price ranges.

We also went with $1,500 because bikes at this  price range are much easier and cheaper to maintain and fixed compared to their more expensive counterparts.

They don’t need as much maintenance and any broken parts won’t cost as much to fix. Not to mention, most if not all of the bikes at the $1,500 price range are up-gradable, so you can always make a couple of improvements as you advance to becoming a more experienced mountain biker.

What to Consider When Choosing Mountain Bikes

mountain bikes below 1500 dollars

Solid, Lightweight Frame

Mountain bikes need lightweight yet durable frames. Carbon fibers are on top of the list of materials that are both strong and light.

However, don’t count on other materials just yet. Aluminum frames are even more durable, albeit at the expense of added heft and weight.

Suspension Type

Full-suspension type bikes are always better, the only issue is that, at the $1,500 price range, you might just end up getting a low-quality full-suspension bike except in rare cases.

You’re better off getting hardtail bikes with better components, if that’s the case.

Comfort and Performance

Since you’re already at a rather high $1,500 price point (but still reasonable when it comes to quality mountain bikes), you expect some comfort to go along with the bike’s performance.

That’s a perfectly reasonable expectation that most bikes on our round up will meet.

From comfortable handlebar positioning and grips to cleverly designed seats, you’ll want to look for a mountain bike that gives you the optimal riding experience. This is especially important when tackling harder trails.

After all, you spent so much on a mountain bike so you don’t have to suffer through an uncomfortable ride across difficult terrain.

We’d recommend reading around for a few individual reviews on the bike you’re interested in. Comfort issues get highlighted immediately by riders who’ve had a bad experience.

User Reviews

When looking at a bike, always look at individual reviews first. The more photos they have, the better.

Most of the time, they’ll talk about how comfortable it is to ride the bike was, and how well it stood up to a couple of weeks of hard use.

Take special note of bikes with positive reviews when it comes to comfort and ride quality.

Final Thoughts

Gone are the days when you’d have to spend north of $2,000 to get yourself a quality mountain bike. These days, even big-name brands have found ways to lower the cost of production and manufacturing of their products to create affordable models without compromising safety, quality, and comfort.

Consider yourself lucky to live in an era where the top mountain bikes below 1500 are just as good as those priced well above it.

So, make sure to make the most out of this opportunity and find the right mountain bike for you.

If budget is a huge issue, try looking at some of the mountain bikes below $300 or even below $200.

You’ll probably need shorts for mountain biking as well, apart from gloves and grips.
